Rob Speranza

From Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Rob Speranza is a PhD graduate of the University of Sheffield Department of English Literature. He holds an MA from the University of Sheffield and BA from Rutgers University, NJ.

Rob runs the South Yorkshire Filmmakers Network as its Producer and Head of Operations, and since 2005 has produced short films and documentaries for a number of clients including five short films for the UKFC and Screen Yorkshire. The SYFN has been actively helping filmmakers and media practitioners since 2004, and is still going strong.

In 2008, Rob produced his fifth short commissioned by Screen Yorkshire, with Alex Usborne. Called ‘Into the Woods’, and written and directed by Matt Taabu, it premiered at the Encounters Festival in November 2008 as part of the ‘Digital Generation’ screenings – a showcase of the best Digital Shorts released by the UKFC in 2008. It also enjoyed an excellent write-up in in the 16th Nov (2008) issue of Screen International. The film further its festival tour in 2009.

The award-winning short film ‘Mother, Mine’ was his first 16mm project, which has enjoyed festival screenings at Manhattan Shorts Festival, LA Shorts, London Short Film Festival, San Diego Women’s Film Festival, Filmstock Film Festival (UK) and Short Cuts in Cologne, Germany – amongst others. The film has recently won the ‘Women Like Film’ prize at 2008’s Salento Film Festival (Italy) and the Yorkshire Film Award at the Leeds IFF (Rob’s third nomination for this prize) and gained an Honourable Mention in the 2008 Turner Classic Shorts competition, part of the prestigious London Film Festival. Rob is developing further film projects with the short’s writer/director Susan Everett.
Rob has recently sold his multiple-award-nominated short films ‘King Ponce’ and ‘Show and Spell’ to international distributors and now is developing 3 feature projects.
