Personal Profile

Alexey Taran

Alexey Taran has worked as director of Bistoury Physical Theatre since 2005. Alexey's work with Bistoury has achieved constant recognition and important awards. For example, the multidisciplinary performance Bolo was realized thanks to a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1996 and 1998, his plays were recognized with awards by the Recontres Choregraphiques in France.

Born in Cuba, he received training in Ballet at Havana's National School of Art. He has been a choreographer and dancer for different companies, such as: National Ballet of Cuba; Danza Abierta (Open Dance), DanzaHoy (Dance Today) and Neodanza (Neodance) in Venezuela; Zagreb Dance Company in Croatia, all of these before founding his own company. He has taught and facilitated workshops in international festivals in Russia, Germany, Colombia and Ecuador, among others, and has practiced as instructor in different art schools and universities in Venezuela and Croatia.

From his early beginnings, Taran's work has been difficult to define, due in great part to his non-structural approach and his constant exploration, research and collaboration with different artists in different media such as film, sculpture, theater and literature. His work, beyond merely distancing itself from the scenic guidelines of contemporary dance, have brought him closer to human beings as a starting point for his artistic creation.
