Last Night at the Ellington

When the managers of the Ellington learn their classic movie theater is closing to make way for a new megaplex, they come up with a plan to shut the Ellington down in style.

Film notes

Last Night At The Ellington is based loosely on my own experiences working at a movie theater back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Although I never had the chance to work at an old movie palace like the Ellington, I worked with the several people who had, and they'd talk about the old theaters like they were old flames. It was a romantic nostalgia that always stuck with me. And yes, there actually was a robbery at one of the old theaters (I wasn't involved, honest), but it was never in the news.

I originally wrote Last Night At The Ellington as a short story, and it sat in my desk (or on my hard drive, to be more specific) for a couple of years. When I started thinking about making a short film, I decided to return to the story and see if I could bring it to the screen. So here we are.

Like anybody that loves movies and grew up in the analog era, I miss those old, slightly shabby theaters with only one or two screens. I miss their history, their frayed edges, their sticky floors and yellow popcorn salt. I still love going to the movies, but it's not quite the same today. Hopefully with Last Night At The Ellington I've captured some of that nostalgia in a coming of age story not only for the characters, but also for the movies.
