Short Film Profile

January: The Cellar

An adult man is sitting in a cellar, peeling potatoes.

Film notes

This film marks the start of our 2012 12movies12minutes project.

The premise was to shoot the film in a continuous take with the maximum length (12 minutes) our camera could handle.

As the director, I asked the actor to improvise around a certain theme - the struggle with growing up and other people's expectations - and react on sounds and movements outside the cellar. These sounds were made by me, acting as the unseen father.

Although I couldn't be in the cellar during the shoot, I told my cameraman to keep his feet at the same spot during filming, only allowing him to move the rest of his body.

It eventually took us three takes and only one afternoon to get the result we were aiming for.
