Chronicle of a Death Postponed

For several years actor Richard Millen was confined to his third-floor Brooklyn apartment, struggling to reclaim his life in the face of a chronic and rare illness. He began recording his daily routines and through his observations came to new insights about the mysterious world of his sickness and the consolations of art.

Film notes

Richard Millen's moving and sometimes funny autobiographical account of everyday life in his Brooklyn apartment documents his insights and meditations, the consolations of art, and the surprises of creativity.

For several years, I was confined to my third floor Brooklyn apartment. Acting and auditioning was no longer an option. Filming seemed accessible-both a way to get out of my head and a  logical extension of a lifelong passion for cinema. This struggle to reclaim my life in the face of illness and solitude is the subject of Chronicle--a mediation on what it is to be inside and to find comfort in what is around you--books, photos, posters, films.
Often the act of turning on the camera would unleash continually surprising memories and thoughts and hopes. Sometimes, it would be a record of mundane details-the weather or the waiting for a nurse or physical therapist...all of this in some ways trying to penetrate the mysteriousness of the world of the sick .Sometimes, I would talk for a minute--very rarely more than five minutes
After countless hours of raw footage, I began the year and a half process of editing-- several themes emerged ..and the film was born..truly,a death postponed.
