Short Film Profile

Doris’s mind is slipping. She is not only haunted by the death of her beloved husband James, but she is also struggling with the re-emergence of Ruth – Doris’s sinister alter-ego.

Film notes

Isolation can be daunting if you don’t think you can cope with the silence… And as we inevitably grow older - the prospect of being isolated from the people we love, from the activities that keep our minds and bodies fresh, and the eventual distortion and perversion of the memories that once kept us and gave us solace - brings about an inertia that can be difficult to shake, especially if one is prone to the trappings of what such a glaring isolation can deliver. Time and delusion roll into one; the outside world has passed you by; and the slim help you get from loved ones doesn’t seem to be nearly enough for someone crying in silence for a lifeline.

Themes of isolation, guilt, unfulfilled desire, and death (y'know, the happy themes!), have bugged my brain for a few years now. But I was never able to contain them in all their mysterious glory. I’m interested in seeing characters at the edge - or the end - of something… a transition of sorts. How they cope (or don’t cope) with their vulnerability; what they must do to find relief or peace from the anxiety that has gripped them, whether the anxiety is self-inflicted or not. And through their short journey, I would hope to bring even a very small empathic understanding of those in our lives who are in a way just like these characters… They could be our relatives, neighbours, or merely random passers by. But deep down we know them, and we recognise them as part of ourselves.
