Short Film Profile

The Portwine Stain

Ex-punk rocker Dave has a severe port wine stain on his face. His only way to attract attention is by telling whopping lies or awful jokes. Trying to impress a girl at a party he goes too far.

Film notes

The film was inspired by my brother’s next door neighbour who used to do everything at night – dig the garden, work the nightshift, take the dog for a walk – we nicknamed him, rightly or wrongly, the serial killer.

It has been shot on Super 16 and Super 8 film. We used super 8 film to show flashbacks and as the story is about an ex-punk rocker, it’s a homage to the punk films of the 1970s which were mostly shot with super 8 cameras as they were so cheap.

I was saving up to make the film, when my brother died unexpectedly so I inherited some money. I thought to myself shall I be sensible and pay off my mortgage or make the film and dedicate it to my brother – so that’s what I did, he is called Seamus.
