The Snallygaster Tale

The year is 1931, the depression is in full swing. Toby,7, lives alone with is father, Hank. Toby has broken the cardinal rule of chicken farming, he's taken a chicken as a pet; a chicken that isn't laying eggs.

Hank attempts to shield his son form the harsh realities of life on the farm by using the Snallygaster Tale to explain the disappearance of chickens from the coop.

Toby eventually learns the awful truth; his father lied and has been killing the chickens when Toby is sleeping. Hank explains to Toby the hard truth about life on the farm; it is a conversation that causes Toby to take his first steps toward manhood.
