Short Film Profile

Pueblos Sin Camino

Aineto, Ibort and Artosilla are three towns that were abandoned in the 50s due to mass-migration to the city. 30 years later, totally derelict and ruined, they were repopulated by a group of youngsters looking for an alternative way of life, more natural and simple. This was the birth of Artiborain Association, which has become the main representative in Spain of the so-called movement “ecoaldeas”: eco-friendly villages.

Fernando, a man from Zaragoza at the verge of retirement, travels there to meet Jesús, a resident of Artosilla, with the firm intention of moving to one of the three villages. Jesús, with the help of other residents, will guide Fernando in the process of his settlement and adaptation to a new way of life.

Film notes

“‘Towns without Road’ is a title with a double meaning. On the one hand, it refers to the abandonment that these towns suffered in the past and, on the other hand, to the vision of future that the main character has of the current social context, led by competition, free trade and globalisation. In this context, he decides to move in order to rediscover his origins, to a place where its inhabitants pursue living their own way of life, trying to escape from the criteria, values and attitudes that govern today’s generation” (Jorge Tsabutzoglu).

The work is primarily for its content, a documentary. However, because of the story, it was interesting to make the spectator feel the internal conflicts of a person who is facing an unfamiliar environment and who is forced to change completely his lifestyle. Thus, it has been made with an approach that introduces the viewer into Fernando’s vision of the new environment that surrounds him and the questions that he faces, choosing along with the characters those moments and events that caused Fernando more doubts when deciding to move to one of these eco-villages - as it is done in the novels, an adaptation of the true story into fiction. In this way, "Pueblos sin camino" is a documentary conceived as fiction, based on real events and starred by real characters in their real environment, being therefore an experimental work that explores and creates a new format that can be more affordable and attractive to a higher ratio of viewers, but without ever losing the freshness and realism of the documentary format.
