A young Greek couple, Mimis and Theano, is living in Europe. A young Greek couple, Mimis and Theano, is working in the Netherlands. A young Greek couple, Mimis and Theano, is going for summer holidays back in Greece.
The concept of Free Camping began few years ago when a young friendly couple had to leave Greece, looking for work abroad. And they actually did find work abroad. Two years later we wanted to set up our next short film, with one restriction: A single set and (of course) a few days filming. In less than a month the screenplay was ready. On a summer trip we found the beach. The idea to combine those “real” characters in an environment of summer holidays dared our enthusiasm, despite all hardships and restrictions. So we wanted to build a story about this (Cultural) European Crisis, before it erupted, or better, before “swallowing” us all. A short story, almost in reverse. Not in a grey urban environment, but in nature, by the sea. Not a tragedy, but a dramedy. Not "indigestible dialogues" but common reason. The transition points out to a permanent suspense that characterizes the whole film, and then that stupid fear. Ideas that "harass" us, thoughts, reflections, sarcasm, self doubt and… the sound of the sea. This prime Greek “ghost element” everywhere, annoying or hypnotizing. And love, family, a game of “archetypes and stereotypes”. Civilization, state, property, Greece, Europe and Rousseau’s quotes ... “The first man having penned a piece of land that thought to say 'this is mine' and found people naive enough to believe him, was the real founder of civil society”.
