Tea and Destiny

Celeste Guilliams knows it's time to let her father know she is leaving home. She is 18 and on her own, but what she doesn't realize is her transition from girl to woman will happen during the conversation. A coming of age and a new focus on life will occur that neither one can argue with.

Film notes

Director Statement:

My mother enlisted in the military during World War 2, but it was difficult for her to do so. She was a Puerto Rican immigrant and didn't speak English without an thick accent. She felt she had to do her part for the country and she felt it would be great way to learn English better and get an education her family couldn't afford. She told me how difficult it was to tell them she was enlisting at that time. It's a decision many young people make today, often to their parents disapproval. I hope my short film will speak to this, for this is also a coming-of-age story, which I hope will inspire others and help clarify what will sometimes motivate these amazing young individuals to volunteer to serve their country.

I am very grateful to my amazing actors, Heather Hermann, who has never acted before, and Jim Waters, a brilliant comic who makes his dramatic debut with "Tea and Destiny." I am also grateful to Nicholas Hoff who did an superb job as film editor and assistant director. Thomas Brecheinsen, my director of photography, is perhaps the man I am most grateful to. He served in both Operation Enduring Freedom (2002) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003). My film is dedicated to the brave men and women, like him, who served in that war.
