The Story of the Kolobok
Synopsis
In this modern version of an ancient Russian folk tale, a humble bun runs away from its makers to avoid being eaten. The little round loaf tumbles through the hands of a host of hungry characters in the modern Russian urban jungle. Seen through his freshly-baked eyes, the artefacts of the Soviet empire loom large as we are plunged into a maelstrom of comic references to Russian life and culture, in which archaic film and folk customs survive among the mechanical guts of a modern city.
Filmmaker Notes
After studying drawing with US artist Tom Blodgett, Jim worked briefly as a set-building assistant in theaters and learned to design and build marionettes. Besides making animation films, he works as a writer, editor and concept person for web and print publications. He has made several films for educational television.
His independent film Kolobok is based partly on his travels in the USSR and among other things, integrates graphic and coloring strategies from the first thirty years of comic strips and cinema.
