A.L.I.C.E.

After Wilbur is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, his younger wife Alice must focus on her transition from dependent to caretaker. Lines become blurred when a handsome rockhound named Delfino encroaches on their desert oasis. His attentions reinforce Alice’s grip on her vitality, and motivate Wilbur to make one last grab for reality.

Film notes

“A.L.I.C.E.” is inspired by the 1938 John Cheever story “His Young Wife”, which is now in the public domain. I say “inspired by” because although Cheever’s story includes a perceived love triangle between an older man, a middle-aged woman and a young man, and a “how to con a con” ending, I added the Alzheimer angle, reworked the dialogue, and I changed the vocation/location of Delfino from a gambling addict at the racetrack in Saratoga Springs, NY to a rockhound in Joshua Tree in the Mojave Desert. In this film, I also tip my hat to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland with the reference to recognizing oneself in a mirror and the constant visual references to holes, pits, burrows and the promise of an alternate reality below the earth.

This is the third film in a series I’m doing called “Over a Cheever”. The first film was produced in 2008. It’s called “Project Ion” and stars David Razowsky. While not based on any Cheever stories, the main character in that film, HE, is an homage to Cheever’s “real” self with its secrets, quirks, and personality projections, as revealed in his published journals and his daughter Susan’s biography of him. The second film, produced in 2009, is “The Catalyst”, inspired by Cheever’s 1944 story, “Family Dinner”. It also features David Razowsky and Joey D’Auria (Wilbur in this film).
